A Study on the Prevalences and Risk Factors of Cataracts in Rural Areas of Chungnam Province

Abstract
For the purpose to investigate the prevalence rates and risk factors of cataracts according to the increase of cataract patients due to the structural change of population, population based study on cataracts was conducted on 746 participants in
an
ophthalmologic examination in a rural area of Chungnam Province. The subjects were selected among above 30 years of age and were received ophthalmologic examination and personally interviewed.
@ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1. The prevalence rates of studied subjects were 65.9%, and the rates increased with age, the increase of rates were higher in above 50 years of age.
2. The prevalence of cataracts were statistically higher with under primary school education group and smoking group, but Birthplace, Health ststus, eating habits, Alcohol drinking habits, use of eye protective materials and use of drug related
to
cataracts were not statistically different.
3. The variables of duration of smoking, frequency of pregnancy and number of children were statistically higher with cataract group than normal group in prevalence of cataracts, but the variables of IOP, exposure time on sunlight in farming
season,
duration of wathing TV and Blood pressure of diastolic were not statistically significants.
4. The regions of cataract originated were 81.3% with both of left and right eyes, and 63.5% with male, 86.4% with female.
5. For eyes with cataract stage, the lens opacity grade were 74.9% with incipient, 23.3% with immature, and the grade distribution was similar with left and right eyes.
6. The distributions of type of cataract were 55.2% with Cortical, 31.5% with Mixed type, 6.9% with Nuclear type in that order.
The level of factors of cataracts was higher with favorite food and frequency of pregnancy, but not statistically significants, while the age factor was statistically significant(P<0.05) from risk value on 0.1661.
